The Arkansas History Commission Announces the Archie Moore, Jr. Materials

9/5/2007

The Arkansas History Commission announces the recent addition of the Archie Moore, Jr., Materials on microfilm. Archie Moore is a collector and antique dealer with a personal interest in Black Americana. He is active in the historical community as a member of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, a board member for the Arkansas Humanities Council and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

The collection contains several church souvenir history booklets, school and fraternal organizational items and Arkansas Teacher Association (ATA) materials from Moore’s extensive personal collection. The ATA materials include convention programs dated 1937 and 1961, along with four issues of the ATA journal, “The Bulletin:” September 1941, March 1942, March 1956, and December 1961. The new additions supplement copies of “The Bulletin,” already microfilmed in the Curtis H. Sykes Collection. Other items of interest include a Gibbs High School graduation invitation, 1926; “The Colored Churchman” Episcopal Newsletter, 1929; the 1946 “Negro Relief Association, Old Folk’s Home Annual Index” from Pine Bluff; a publication from the United Friends of America fraternal organization, 1954 and documents related to the Mosaic Templars.  The collection, located in General Microfilm section, consists of two rolls of microfilm dated from 1924-1961. Linda McDowell, African American History Coordinator at the Arkansas History Commission, stated that additional items are expected to be microfilmed along with other original materials that will eventually make up the Archie Moore, Jr. Manuscript Collection, a significant resource of Arkansas African American history.
